Ink and substrate options

Finishing is everything that happens after the ink dries. It’s where most of the variation in quality, durability and application-readiness gets determined.

Grommeting and hemming: Grommets are metal eyelets punched into the edges of a banner for rope or cable fastening. Hemming is a folded, stitched edge that reinforces the banner under load. Both are standard on outdoor vinyl banners.

Pole pockets: Sewn sleeves along the top and bottom edge of a banner for insertion of a pole or rod. Standard on tear-drop banners and feather banners.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most reprints happen because of incorrect colour modes, low-resolution images or missing bleed. Catching these before production starts saves time and cost.

Uploading RGB instead of CMYK: RGB is the colour mode for screens and cameras. CMYK is the colour mode for print. An RGB file submitted for large format printing will produce colours that look different from what you saw on screen, particularly in photos and gradients. Save all artwork as CMYK before sending.

Low-resolution images: A photo that looks sharp at A4 on screen may pixelate at 1.5m wide. Check resolution against your intended print size and viewing distance before building the file.

No bleed: Bleed is the extension of artwork beyond the trim edge, typically 3mm to 5mm. Without it, small shifts in cutting leave white edges around the print. Every large-format file should include bleed.

Wrong file size: Submitting a file built at A4 for a 2m x 1m job means the printer scales up from a small source file. The output will be soft. Build artwork at the correct final dimensions, or at a proportional scale such as 1:10 if file size becomes unworkable.

Ignoring viewing distance: A file built to 300 DPI for a banner viewed from 5 metres is unnecessarily large. A file built to 72 DPI for a retail poster viewed from 0.5 metres will look poor. Match resolution to viewing distance before production starts.
